Another loss?by leaders Meridian Youth Milan has allowed Mackeson Brittons Hill to close the gap at the top of the Digicel Premier League to just two points.
Whereas Youth Milan crashed to a third defeat in their last four games, losing 1-0 to Pride of Gall Hill to stay on 27 points, Brittons Hill melted ICE Wales 2-0 and moved to 25 points.
Edwin Brereton opened the scoring for Brittons Hill in the 14th minute when he drilled a low left foot shot past Wales’ goalkeeper Bentley Springer after receiving a pass from Walton Burrowes.
Three minutes into the second half, Burrowes got his eighth goal of the tournament when he ran onto a weighted pass and chipped the ball over the head of the advancing Springer.
With tonight’s rescheduled match against Sportingbet Pinelands at the Stadium, Brittons Hill’s coach Lennux Ferdinand wisely substituted his veterans Luther Watson, Gregory “Lalu” Goodridge and Brereton.
Earlier, Curtis Odle converted a penalty in the 52nd minute to put another dent in the faltering Milan’s title hopes. Ryan Griffith was adjudged by referee Trevor “Muslim” Taylor to be fouled in the area by Romelle Burgess as he and fellow defender Dwayne Skinner sandwiched the dreadlocked striker before he could make a cross from the by-line.
But Milan, who were kept in the match through fine goalkeeping by Adrian Chase and a goalline clearance by Burgess after Jamal Chandler tried to push home a rebound following Chase’s save on Griffith, squandered a few chances to get the equaliser.
A minute after Odle’s penalty, Kenroy Skinner went down the right flank and delivered a cross onto the boot of Norman Forde but he side-footed his one-time shot wide of the right post.
Ramuel Miller also headed wide from a long cross by Corey Barrow, who made a daring injury-time run. He dribbled through the Gall Hill defence before cutting the ball across the goal mouth, only to see Skinner skewed his attempted tap-in.
Milan, who were in high gear, winning eight of their nine first round matches, have now gone into reverse, and will be hoping to get back on track with a victory against Wales in tonight’s feature match at 8 p.m.
In Sunday’s opener, Paradise and Sportingbet Pinelands played to a goalless draw.
