On Sunday, August 5th, 2018, a new Miss Crop Over will be crowned.
This is the fifth year for the show that will see, contestants vying for the title under the theme Our Culture Our Environment.
This is a welcome addition to the many activities for Crop Over and engages positive social action among young people. The winner will be representing Barbados at the Miss Caribbean Culture Globe, and must promote the festival and Barbados to her fellow contestants and others.
The Miss Crop Over show is designed to assist young women in developing their true potential by going through a series of training workshops. This year, a costume section, will replace the swimsuit section, which the organisers say, would be more in keeping with “value building of our young ladies”.
Contestants will be judged in the categories: knowledge on the environment and culture, talent, costume, evening gown and a question and answer segment. Contestants will be trained in such areas as social etiquette, public speaking, HIV/AIDS among young people, community programmes and conflict resolution. Contestants must also adopt a charity and give a presentation on their career choice, or business goals.
The winner will receive assistance in developing her career, or the opportunity to start a business. This opportunity will allow her, as a young person, to develop a sense of independence that would augur well for the continued development of our young people within the community. (PR)
