Dwight Alleyne is the first champion driver of the Barbados Association of Dragsters and Drifters (BADD).
And he will take the first lien on the Chefette Restaurants John “Tiny” Harrison Memorial Trophy, symbol of supremacy among the drivers of BADD, when the club holds its first annual awards presentation at a venue yet to be made public.
Chairman of BADD Nicholas Harrison said Alleyne had driven flawlessly on the final race day and stormed up the points table to end with a massive total of 531 points and will collect the coveted title.
Harrison said, too, that the coming season will start on January 28 with a day and night event.
He added that the future looks good as a number of new sponsors, who had been waiting to see how the club managed its affairs are expected to be on board.
“The season will get started with a day and night event at Bushy Park from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and should be even more excited than what had been seen this season,” said the chairman.
He added that drivers who had been troubled with mechanical problems during the year, as well as those who had been upgrading and replacing parts are expected to swell the ranks of racers in the coming year and keep the fans happy.
At the wheel of his Dennis Heath-prepared Subaru WRX STi, Alleyne defied the odds on the final day’s racing at Bushy Park.
He turned in a flawless performance while front-runners Benjamin Eastmond, Jason Downey and Anthony Ramon Archer all committed errors and failed to make it to the semi-finals of their respective groups on the day.
The new champion driver had been lying fourth in the standings going into Twisted Drag Warz 6; the final event of the club’s calendar, which was watched by a large crowd.
Eastmond, in a Daihatsu Charmant, ended the season with 438 points and took second spot. Early title-favourite Archer in the LIME/4G Network Nissan Pulsar, finished third with 435 points.
Downey, in a Toyota Runx, placed fourth with 433 points, while Albert Collymore, who competed in a Toyota Starlet, rounded out the top five with 413 points.
