Barbados’ National Athletics Championships are not on the right track as the country’s marquee meet and should be overhauled.
United States-based long-standing men’s 400 metres record holder Elvis Forde has bemoaned the state of track and field and facilities in his native Barbados.
Forde, who attended the June 22 to 24 Championships on a scouting mission for Temple University where he is the women’s track and cross country coach, said a new or refurbished National Stadium is a must.
“We need that because I think we need to bring people back to the sport. We got to find a way to make this better. A national meet should have a little bit more excitement and more jubilation when it comes to the athletes,” Forde told THE NATION.
“We should be celebrating the individual champions a lot more in doing things that will make them feel good and appreciated for the efforts they are putting in,” he said. (EZS)
