Christmas has come early for Edna Licorish (at right).
The 76-year-old of Plymouth Square, Cave Hill, St Michael, is happy she will be spending the holiday season in her spruced up home.
It was also a belated birthday gift for Licorish, who celebrated last Monday.
The present was delivered by a team from the maintenance department of the University of the West Indies, who worked tirelessly to refurbish the house in just under two weeks.
Project coordinator Diana Hinds said that instead of their customary Christmas party, the team opted to reach out to the community and help someone in need.
“We made the elderly our focus because of the neglect some of them face at Christmas time,” Hinds said, noting this was the first project of this kind undertaken by the team.
Licorish, who lives with her 17-year-old grandson Romario, said yesterday: “I am real happy. I love everything that everybody did. It is a surprise.” (CM)
