Throughout the livestock competitions, judges were heard debating the quality of animals in the ring.

They discussed the genetic traits of the beef animals, noting that some farmers were breeding beef cows with dairy cows to produce bigger animals, which were then difficult to judge, as they lacked the requisite genetic characteristics.

Things got heated at one point in the Beef Show when the beef bulls under 12 months were being judged.

Scarcely any of the animals displayed the characteristics of a bull under 12 months – they were way too mature-looking, yet had no permanent teeth. The age of an animal is often referred to by the number of permanent teeth it has. (SB)
