Lockdown could strain families

The next 12 days will be highly stressful, with the potential for violence in many Barbadian homes, says mental health professionals and a civil society activist.

They said that households already in turmoil would likely get worse, while those where people manage to get along with limited contact will likely become very strained, and vulnerable women will be targeted for exploitation.

The professionals spoke to the Weekend Nation in response to the announcement by Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw that with effect from today until midnight on April 14, Barbados was under “a 24-hour curfew unless there is legitimate business which will require you to leave your home and to be on the road”.

The 24-hour lockdown was imposed to fight the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) here, which up to yesterday had been contracted by 46 people. (SP)
