Rough seas hindering search for teen

Rough sea conditions made the search for teenager Amalee Mayers a lot more difficult today.

And if that continues, the recovery team will take their search inland. Operation officer with the Barbados Coast Guard, Master Chief Petty Officer Malcolm Thompson, gave that update today at Tent Bay, St Joseph, where the 16-year-old left on Friday to go on a spear fishing trip with three friends.

“Sea conditions changed drastically from [Saturday]. The currents and undercurrents today are moving to the south and they are strong. Visibility was poor so there wasn’t a lot that the divers could see at the bottom,” Thompson said.

Mayers, of Beach Mount, Bathsheba, who was a certified diver and licensed fisherman, was familiar with the area and frequently went on fishing trips to the “barracuda ground” just off the bay. (TG)
