The sound of pounding hooves and flying dust associated with horse racing at the Garrison Savannah gave way to a different kind of activity this week.
Apart from workers with heavy duty pieces of construction equipment pounding away, there were two large machines – one on the sand track and another grading the race track – as restorative work was carried out to improve conditions.
The arrival of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in early March, and the mandatory social distancing safety measures, led to the Barbados Turf Club (BTC) cancelling the March 22 race day and subsequent race days for an initial period of three months.
The BTC then brought forward the maintenance work that was originally scheduled for August 31 to November 21. (LY)
