Amalee Mayers was given a seaman’s sendoff today as his ashes were spread out to sea by his parents.
More than 100 surfers and other people gathered to support the family at Tent Bay, St Joseph, near to where the 16-year-old lost his life last month.
The teenager had gone diving with others, when he went missing.
Mayers was a certified diver and licensed fisherman.
Chief lifeguard Ken Mayers helped organise the hour-long ceremony.
“Internationally when a surfer falls, we do a paddle out in honour. Today we will form a circle around his father’s boat, then follow him out to where Amalee died, where he will spread the ashes,” he said.
Amalee’s mother Antoinette Downes, family and close friends also went out.
The family wished to thank everyone who participated, with Amalee’s father Melvin Mayers saying, while the ceremony was beautiful, he could not help but wish his son was back with him again. (CA)
