Support for Govt’s rapid test caution

GOVERNMENT’S WARNING to Barbadians about their usage of antibody tests for novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is getting support from the pharmaceutical community. 

Last week, the Ministry of Health and Wellness condemned some service providers for providing antibody tests, which it said were not reliable. 

“At this point, the Ministry of Health and Wellness does not support the use of rapid antibody tests for the diagnosis of COVID-19, since test results using this approach may be highly unreliable,” it said in a statement.

Since March, the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory has been using molecular testing or PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology for the diagnosis of acute infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.
