Moe: Hoyos an astute journalist

Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs Senator Lucille Moe today paid a tribute to journalist Patrick Hoyos, who passed away on July 1 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

“With profound sadness, I received news yesterday of the passing of one of this nation’s most seasoned journalists, Patrick Hoyos.

“‘Pat’, as he was fondly known by many a friend and colleague, was an astute journalist who enjoyed a distinguished career that spanned many decades from his days at the Barbados Advocate and the Nation Publishing Company Limited.

“Patrick was the president and founder of Hoyos Publishing in 1991, launching the popular and business savvy publication, the Broad Street Journal, in 1993, where his weekly column, The Hoyos File provided a careful and important analysis of the major business and economic issues of the day. In addition, he lent his on-air skills for the daily Business News radio updates on Y 103.3 FM. 

“Whilst quiet and unassuming in nature, Patrick was a no-nonsense person who tackled the pressing issues of the day. He was never timid about calling it as he saw it and made it clear to the political directorate, in his own inimitable fashion, that he would cover any assignment with impartiality. 

“Above all, Patrick loved Barbados and cared deeply about what was happening in the country. He was a friend to many and will be dearly missed by many. The journalistic fraternity has lost one of its most erudite soldiers.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to Mr Hoyos’ immediate family, other relatives and friends.
