Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Senators Lynette Holder and Lisa Cummins believe the country should attract its talented citizens back home.
The two first-time senators yesterday supported The Constitution Amendment Bill (2018), which was passed in the House of Assembly last week to allow the Mia Mottley administration to appoint two Barbadians who had been residing outside the country for more than 12 months.
“The issue is really a simple one,” Holder said moments after Opposition Senator Caswell Franklyn said he would not support it because the Government had amended the Constitution to facilitate friends.
“It is, in my view, correcting a discriminatory provision we should all want to erase so that Barbadians seeking high office have that opportunity . . . . This change is for all Barbadians,” she said.
“We are righting a wrong. We have an opportunity to give those who want to serve [the chance] to do so,” Holder added.
Cummins said that many Barbadians who had worked or served Barbados away from the country should have the right to return home and make a difference.
“I’m glad to see two of my countrymen return to Barbados to serve their country,” she added. (BA)
