Chargers inflicted the first 2020 defeat on repeat Division 2 queens Deacons when the Goddard Enterprises Limited Volleyball League continued Thursday night with a number of rescheduled matches.

Chargers, who are guaranteed the runners-up spot to their bitter opponents, hosted Deacons at Hill Road and stunned them in straight sets 25-22, 27-25. National basketballer Latifah Wood slam dunked Deacons at the net all night and she served up four critical aces in the second set when her team trailed 19-23.

After a very close first half in the opening set, Chargers eased away from 11-10 to take control 17-11 with Wood dominating the net. Deacons rallied behind the efforts of veteran Lisa Russell and big south paw Irecka Louis, who attacked well and proved to be lethal from the serving area.

However, sensible play from setter Janelle Pilgrim and consistent serving from Chargers who exploited the spiked serves to full effect kept Deacons at bay with Andrea Oughterson and Tumara Nurse supporting well in attack. At 24-22, Wood closed out the first set with an ace. (KAB)
