The Barbados Meteorological Services is closely monitoring the progress of two Tropical Waves to the east of Barbados.

A bulletin from the Met Office said the first tropical wave was located near 57W or about 130 miles (210 km) east of Barbados at 5 p.m. today.

Light to moderate shower activity associated with this tropical wave began to affect Barbados late today and is expected to persist into the night.

The second tropical wave was located near 52W or about 500 miles (800 km) east of Barbados also at 5 p.m. today.

Although convection marginally improved as the day progressed, the tropical wave is still very disorganised and environmental conditions are not very conducive for any significant development.

The system is expected to track quickly westward at near 20 mph (32 km/h) over the next few days. This should bring the wave axis through the region by Monday afternoon.

Numerical guidance is in good agreement on keeping the system as an open wave as it passes Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. Environmental conditions will remain consistently unsupportive for any significant development between its current location and passage across Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, the bulletin said.

Moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are expected when the tropical wave passes on Monday, August 17.

This could prompt a flash-flood watch/warning at short notice.

The public is advised to closely monitor official sources for updates from the Barbados Meteorological Services over the next 24 hours. The next update will be at 10 a.m. or sooner if conditions warrant. (PR)
