New produce stalls were officially opened at the Berinda Cox Fish Market in Oistins, Christ Church, on Friday.

Minister of Maritime Affairs Kirk Humphrey said the project, which cost around $60 000, was the latest they had done at the market. Others included the installation of solar panels, major repairs to the stalls and counters and a barrier to prevent further vehicular accidents with the fish vendors.

The latter was promised after vendor Rita “Sissy” Hunte was struck and killed in a freak accident earlier this year. Another vendor, Dorothy Hall, was also injured.

“The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy has started to do a number of things in the markets. We made a promise when we first came into office to upgrade the state of all the markets and so far we’ve done work on four or five markets. In the next year or two we would have completed all the renovations,” he said.

The vendors thanked Humphrey, pointing out that previously when it rained, they had to work in water and mud. (CA)
