McDonald Gittens was filled with excitement having reached his 100th birthday today.

The island’s newest centenarian said he was grateful to have his family and friends out to support him.

Gittens was an employee of the National Housing Corporation for 32 years and worked on many of the houses in his community of Bayville, St Michael. He said all praises had to be given to God for seeing him to this ripe old age.

“Put God in front. If you ain’t put [Him] in front, you can’t live to be this age. Put God in front, and the others not behind, but on the side. You can’t put everybody behind, some got to be on the side. I feel so happy to see my family and my friends. I can’t complain, Lord knows best. Sometimes I feel like I would cry,” he said.

Gittens said he spent his days walking up and down the house, as he was not able to move around outside as before.

The father of five children, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren – with one on the way – and one great-great grandchild, said he intended to spend the day celebrating with his children and family.  (RA)
