It appears that Barbadians are being more fire-cautious as the Barbados Fire Service is reporting a 12 per cent reduction in fires from the same period last year.

Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard disclosed yesterday that the bulk of the fires for 2020 were concentrated around the COVID-19 lockdown period, which ran from April to June.

Speaking to the media following a ceremony at the General Post Office in Bridgetown to mark the appointment of 22 officers, Maynard attributed the 200 fewer house fires – 1 400 up to the end of last week compared with 1 600 for the corresponding period last year – to a combination of greater public awareness as well as the recent laws geared towards promoting greater fire safety.

“We have continued to see a reduction by approximately ten per cent every year. We have had some programmes going that we believed would have contributed to this reduction. We also saw a few pieces of legislation passed and persons have been compliant. If you have a more educated society, then they would tend to do things the right way. (CLM)
