The incidence of coronavirus in Barbados may be low, but the pandemic could be responsible for a rise in domestic violence.
This suggestion was made by acting representative of the United Nations Women Multi-Country Office Caribbean, Tonni Brodber, during yesterday’s launch of the National Campaign for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.
It is an annual international campaign that seeks to bring awareness to the physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence that plagues the lives of women and girls.
“In spite of the low direct impact of the coronavirus, there is evidence that there has been an increase in reported domestic violence cases to the police in the months of May and June, of 37.5 per cent,” Brodber told a forum of representatives of Government and civil society organisations at the Warrens Office Complex.
