Newly appointed West Indies Under-19 head coach Floyd Reifer says his vision is not simply to develop a strong cadre of players but to transform the next generation of cricketers into elite athletes.

The former West Indies batsman, who has enjoyed success with the region’s development teams, said preparing the players for next year’s ICC Youth World Cup was only part of a wider thrust that would have long-term benefits for West Indies cricket.

“After this project, I’m hoping to teach these young men how to become professionals,” said Reifer, who was last week named to oversee the Under-19’s preparation for the World Cup.

“We need the elite athlete. I believe in having the elite athlete first before the cricketer. If we have that elite athlete, with that elite athlete mindset, we will produce better cricketers. (CMC)
