A multimillion-dollar waste management system is under consideration for the Bridgetown Port.

This was disclosed during a virtual town hall meeting hosted by Barbados Port Inc’s divisional manager corporate development and strategy, Captain Karl Branch earlier today.

Also participating in the Zoom session and fielding questions were Barbados Port Inc’s divisional manager operations, Ian Stewart and Robert Greisbach, director of energy consulting with the Canadian Company Hatch.

Branch said the objective was to produce a waste-to-energy system capable of accommodating the expected additional volume of waste from cruise ships homeporting here as well as that from local commercial sources.

He anticipated a system that would allow the 24-hour operation of the port, and which would produce the volume of electricity from destruction of the waste, to fuel much of the port’s operation.

The estimated cost is BDS$40 million. (GC)
