Ward A3 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) has been closed temporarily and nurses there have been deployed to other critical areas.
Yesterday, director of medical services Dr Clyde Cave said the virus “is changing things up”.
“The A wards are surgical wards and since we are on emergency and time-sensitive urgencies only, the patients who would normally be admitted for surgery are not being admitted. So obviously you would have empty beds and nurses there with not as much to do.
“We are getting more COVID-positive or potentially COVID-infected patients coming to the Accident and Emergency Department. Outpatients in Accident and Emergency are getting sicker and we have to test them before they can come in the hospital.” (SB)
