BWA chief: Don’t waste water on cars

General Manager of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) Keithroy Halliday is advising Barbadians against washing their cars as the ash plumes continue to cover the island.

He said it was counterproductive to do so while the ash was still falling, adding that water should only be used where necessary.

“The Chief Medical Officer [Dr Kenneth George] advised wisely that everyone should stay indoors as much as they can, limiting their movements. I’m seeing all sorts of information circulating that I can’t necessarily attest to, but I think we have to make sure we apply simple logic.

“I don’t know if it makes sense cleaning cars at this time. You’re using a precious resource that is limited. The ash will continue to fall for the foreseeable future . . . . While it is an asset we want to protect presumably, we still need to be sensible about the decisions we’re making, and hopefully we can have everyone exercising the same type of thinking and only use potable water where necessary,” he said over the weekend.
