The Director of Public Prosecution’s Office yesterday withdrew the COVID-19 charges against Guyanese shopkeepers Emma Ann Abrahim and Churaman Veerandra, but the two will still have charges to answer.

That’s because Principal Crown Counsel Krystal Delaney instituted new similar charges when the two shopkeepers appeared in the District “C” St Matthias Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Abrahim and Veerandra, whose addresses were listed as the corner of Pinfold Street and Roebuck Street, St Michael, had been brought to the District “A” Magistrates’ Court on summonses accusing them of contravening Paragraph (3), Subparagraph (1) of the Emergency Management COVID-19 Protocols Special Curfew No. 3 Directive 2021, in that there being a directive requiring every person to observe such social distancing and associated protocols in the interest of public health imposed from February 3 to 17, being the owner of a non-essential service not permitted to open in this directive, namely Aaron’s Fruit and Vegetable Minimart, they failed to remain closed on February 8, 2021.
