Philip Clarke just never gets old. The 40-year-old veteran proved age is merely a number after winning his latest Barbados Cycling Union’s road race on the Bulkeley circuit last weekend.
Riding about ten laps from St George Secondary to Bulkeley and back, Clarke outsprinted national time trial record holder Russell Elcock to win the Elite Division by nearly three bike lengths.
It was Clarke’s second win of this road race season. He announced his return to Barbados in grand style by taking March’s criterium in Speightstown.
Clarke’s Massy United Insurance teammate and reigning national road race champ Gregory Vanderpool came third despite getting to the line after the race had already started.
Elcock and Clarke went on a two-man break from the first lap after the former made his customary early attack on the peloton.
Team Swift’s Chayne Goodman won Category 2 by holding off Massy’s Dominic Howard, while Allan Maynard of Fugen took top honours in Category 3.
Elcock’s FTR Cycling Club teammate Junior Proverbs beat Rene Lashley of Fugen to take the Masters’ title before Reginald Jones upended fellow independents Gregory Downie and Ronald Harding in the Over-50 category.
Unattached rider Michael Batson came out on top in the Novice Division after finishing ahead of FTR Cycling Club’s Nathaniel Weekes and fellow independent Alan Cadogan.
The BCU season continues on Sunday with another road race at Foursquare. (JM)
