SSA staff upset private haulers brought in again

Our work is better than theirs! Staff at the state-owned Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) weren’t happy last year when private haulers were brought in to clear the country of refuse.

And they aren’t any happier now the private haulers have been brought back, claiming their work is better and more efficient once they have the necessary equipment.

“The bottom line is that we need more trucks. The workshop staff has done a great job keeping the few trucks on the road, but there is only so much we can do,” a senior mechanical worker from the SSA said on condition of anonymity.

Tensions are high in the SSA again after private haulers were reintroduced last week. The hiring of the private companies has also prompted the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) to send correspondence to the Government agency on how this second stint was arranged.

“The NUPW was never consulted before the private haulers were engaged again,” said a peeved president of the union, Akanni McDowall.

“We were only informed in writing about the engagement. That document will be sent to the SSA committee of the NUPW for them to determine the next step,” he added.

The NUPW chief said the private hauler issue would be placed on their front burner this week. (BA)
