Matters related to transnational organised crime and corruption, as well as human trafficking, were among issues discussed between representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Attorney General, Adriel Brathwaite, recently.
During the visit, Brathwaite indicated that Barbados and the region could use additional resources in the fight against matters such as human trafficking. The Minister explained that one of the island’s challenges was that while victims were identified, the identity of their perpetrators went undetected. He noted that the more successful interventions were usually multi-jurisdictional.
The Attorney General extended an invitation to the representatives to see how the existing relationship could be expanded.
In response, regional representative of the UNODC, José Vila Del Castillo, said his organisation wanted to begin working more in-depth in Central America and the Caribbean. He stressed that it was important to start implementing protocols for transnational organised crime and corruption. (BGIS)
