Pollard: Gaining points crucial

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard says his side will continue their chase for an automatic place in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup 2023 India, when they face Australia in the first One-day International (ODI) today.

The match is the first in a series of three day/night contests between the two sides that will be held this week at Kensington Oval, which will be empty because of safety and health concerns posed by a spike in COVID-19 cases in the island over the past fortnight. The other two matches are set for Thursday and Saturday.

With ten points awarded in each match under the new ODI Super League instituted by the ICC, the sport’s world governing body, every ODI match will count towards qualification for the World Cup.

Only the top seven teams in the 13-team Super League and hosts India earn automatic qualification for the World Cup. (AR)
