Self-governance ‘vital to process’

Complete self-governance is integral to the Emancipation process, says Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw.

In a message marking Emancipation Day yesterday, she touched on Barbados becoming a republic, a hotly debated issue since Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced last Monday Barbados would become a republic by November 30, Independence Day.

“Equally, even as the country debates our decision to become a republic on November 30 this year, there can be no denying that complete self-governance must be an integral part of the process of Emancipation. We cannot shy away from it,” Bradshaw said.

She reasoned that leaders, whether in Government, business, the church or civil society, had an absolute duty of ensuring that for people of African descent, August 1 is never forgotten or minimised. (AC/PR)
