His record with its 21 previous convictions was bad, Leandro Renaldo Pope admitted yesterday.
But he was tired of spending his life in jail and wanted to make something for himself outside.
Pope was speaking after he had just been convicted of unlawfully wounding Kenneth Dookey with intent on January 19, 2015.
The jury in the No. 2 Supreme Court yesterday took just under an hour to find him guilty of the first count. He had also been charged with a lesser, alternative count of unlawfully wounding the same man. Principal Crown Counsel Alliston Seale prosecuted.
Pope had 15 convictions for burglary, two for assault and one each for having a gun, ammunition, unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm, and theft.
“Sir, I know that I ain’t no saint but whatever you do, I would just like it to be very lenient,” he told Justice Randall Worrell.
“I don’t like prison. I don’t want to be in jail years and years wasting my life. I have got things to accomplish. My family love me and I see them every day,” he added.
Justice Worrell ordered a pre-sentencing report and adjourned the matter until June 12. (HLE)
