General secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), Toni Moore, says her decision to join the ranks of the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is turning out to be a visionary move for this country’s oldest trade union.

Moore, who won the St George North seat on a BLP ticket in November last year, drove home this point during the delivery of her remarks during the BWU’s 79th Annual Delegates’ Conference, which was held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex yesterday.

Moore said with infighting in some sister organisations and trade union solidarity not at the strength that it used to be, the BWU’s decision to position itself in a place of political influence was fortuitous and well-timed.

“The BWU – and this general secretary – has had to revisit a previous stance on partisan involvement in politics and the decision made by my immediate predecessor, Sir Roy Trotman, some 26 years before last year to maintain a non-partisan stance in politics. . .” (CLM)
