The Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination will soon be a thing of the past as the Ministry of Education moves to phase out the annual test, starting with a review of the schools’ syllabus.

Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw said gone were the days when children could “just be prepared for an examination”.

“The only reason we were pushing to have this examination completed in the last year was simply because we had no other form of assessment up until that point. Otherwise, as the Prime Minister said and as I have said previously, our intention was to move away from the Common Entrance examination,” she said during a virtual press conference from Ilaro Court yesterday to announce this year’s results.”

Bradshaw noted as the ministry changed the way in which instruction was delivered and the curriculum, they had to make it more relevant to the nation’s children. She said work had already started with the Education Reform Unit having already drafted a framework for the new structure to be implemented.   (RA)
