Eighty-seven people, 40 females and 47 males, are the latest to be diagnosed with COVID-19.  The Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory conducted 1 373 tests on Tuesday, September 7.

The new cases consist of 70 people who are 18 years old and over, and 17 who are under the age of 18.

There are currently 607 people in isolation.

Confirmed cases of the virus recorded since March 2020 reached 5 573 (2 759 females and 2 814 males). There were 51 deaths.

The public health laboratory carried out 276 884 tests since February last year.

Under the National Vaccination Programme for COVID-19, 117 259 people were inoculated with first doses of the vaccines, while 95 816 individuals (35.4 per cent of the population) received second doses and are fully vaccinated.

At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, there were 637 people in isolation.

Of these, 513 patients (81 per cent) were unvaccinated and 105 (16 per cent) were fully vaccinated. Nine people, all in tertiary isolation, were partially vaccinated for COVID-19.

Five of those fully vaccinated patients (one in primary and four in secondary) were in need of care and the other 100 were in tertiary isolation.

Primary and secondary isolation for COVID-19 patients in Barbados are units which accommodate those who are very ill and need close monitoring and treatment, with primary isolation being designated for the most severely ill.

Meanwhile, tertiary isolation houses patients who are only mildly ill, or not showing any illness.

It is important to note that the number of persons in isolation changes throughout the day as persons are admitted and discharged. (BGIS)
