Inappropriate traits and not enough pay are two reasons keeping people from joining the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF).
Deputy Commissioner Erwin Boyce told the media yesterday the force was almost 300 officers short, but it was not for a lack of applicants.
He was speaking after the launch of a five-day United States Department of Justice-sponsored training course in tactical safety and planning for 18 local officers at the Regional Police Training Centre in Seawell, Christ Church.
“The shortage remains acute; I think we are about 279 persons short. We are making efforts to recruit but at the same time you have to appreciate to become a police officer requires a screening process, which involves background checks, polygraph tests and examinations, which are critical to the type of person we engage.
