High joblessness

Unemployment remains high in Barbados, especially among women.

The Barbados Statistical Service’s (BSS) most recently published Continuous Household Labour Force Survey, for the second quarter ended June 30, concluded that the unemployment rate was 15.9 per cent, a “slight” improvement over the first quarter’s 17.2 per cent.

“The unemployment rate for males contracted to 14.1 per cent, while for females, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 17.8 per cent. The actual number of unemployed persons totalled 21 700, representing a contraction, albeit slight,” the BSS said.

In the first quarter, the state agency said, there were 22 000 people unemployed. It also reported that the total number of employed was estimated at 114 400, increasing from 105 700 in the previous quarter. (SC)
