There was a good response to the Tax Fair organised by the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) yesterday to give the public the chance to hear from staff about any issues related to taxes, payments, and the services on offer.

Participants also got to file their taxes on site at Heroes Square, The City.

Acting Revenue Commissioner Wayne Forde said since online filing for taxes started in 2008, there was only paperless filing and the BRA wanted the public to be au fait with the system. He said at first a lot of people said they did not have a computer, but there is an app that they can use to file with a cell phone.

With regard to paying taxes online, he said the facility was available only for land tax, but BRA was working on having all taxes payable online when the Tax Administration Management Information System (TAMIS) is fully functional.

TAMIS was launched in February and will be used by corporate Barbados to file taxes in June, and next year will be open to the public.

Forde said BRA was trying to have an integrated management system using one tax identification number to make for seamless recording, reporting and filing of taxes.

The BRA also launched its customer charter, which speaks to what service the public should expect and also for the taxpayers to know their rights, and what is expected of them. (LK)
