We’re nearly half way through the year already! Can you imagine! Where does the time go?! Last year this time we were still reeling from the pandemic, and added to that this year is the ash and threat of more ash….not to mention the hurricane season which will soon be upon us.

Makes me wonder how do we as a nation deal with our anxiety, our stress? What is the national response to deal with the intangible fallout of disasters? Many people think the annual Crop Over festival with its variety of activities is a great way to release stress built up through the year; but we didn’t have it last year, and word is that there may be a different looking one this year.

Wellness experts recommend yoga and meditation to calm fears, stress and anxiety; maybe we could explore a national programme along those lines. Places of worship encourages us to pray and have faith.

That said, in this month’s Better Health, we feature a man who redirected his life through capoeira, and a woman who had a near death experience. The Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners also has a special message about curing the “infodemic” of false information about the pandemic, and seeks to address and demystify common myths surrounding the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

We’ve shared information in Better Health about the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB) and the great work they are doing to help reduce childhood obesity. This month we hear from a beneficiaryof the HSFB Yute Gym.

The World Health Organisation has designated 2021 as the International Year of Health and Care Workers to show appreciation for their ongoing and sometimes thankless work, especially over the last year. This month we begin a series that turns the spotlight on some of our own health and care workers. Dr Andre Graham, one of the doctors on call at the Harrison Point facility is our first feature.

As always there are many great reads in three main themes in our magazine. It’d be great to know which ones you liked best under Lifestyle, Nutrition or Health. (My personal favourite is Dr C who appears on the inside back cover:-) Have a great read!
