How many of us have ever heard of Myasthenia Gravis? Well, this month of June is dedicated to Myasthenia Gravis (MG) which is “ a chronic neuromuscular disease which derives its name from the Latin and Greek words meaning “grave muscle weakness”.The disease is characterised by abnormal weakness of voluntary muscles (those controlled by will). This weakness increases with activity and decreases with periods of rest.” President of the MG association Rosalind Mascoll shares more information on this comparatively rare disease. MA association members Deanne Phillips tells an ‘in her own words’ story about living with MG.
Our cover story is also about a relatively rare condition called fibromyalgia, and a strong and determined woman who has been living with it a number of years, has shared her experience with us.
June is also the month of awareness for many health issues, including: Environment Month World Environment Day (June 5th), National Cancer Survivors Day (June 6), World Brain Tumour Day (June 8), Global Wellness Day (June 12th), World Blood Donor Day (14th), Elder Abuse Awareness Day (15th), Autistic Pride Day (June 18), World Sickle Cell Day, (June 19), World Vitiligo Day (June 25), Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month, Cataract Awareness Month, Men's Health Month, National Aphasia Awareness Month, National Congenital Cytomegalovirus Awareness Month National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, National Scleroderma Awareness Month, PTSD Awareness Month, and Scoliosis Awareness Month.
And with these many health issues in one month, we owe it to ourselves to take great care of our bodies. The best way to do that is to feed it with the right natural nutrients. That’s why Better Health this month offers you advice on some of the top superfoods you should eat to maintain good health. Our Maternity Matters column examines if women in labour should be allowed to eat and drink (who knew that was a thing!?) Also, this month has a number of articles which explore the impact of laughter on health, as well as the importance of deep breathing.
Happy reading as you continue on your road to better health!
