More illegal drugs were destroyed yesterday following efforts from the Royal Barbados Police Force and tips from the public.

The destruction of the 14 110 cannabis plants and 1 088 grams of cocaine occurred at the Portvale Sugar Factory in St James around 2 p.m. with assistance from officials from the force’s Northern Division.

The total weight of narcotics destroyed was 638 kgs kilograms or 289 lbs.

The drugs were seized or discovered by officers from the Crab Hill Police Station, in St Lucy; District “E” Police Station in Speightstown, St Peter; Holetown Police Station in St James and District “F” in Blackman’s, St Joseph, which make up the division.

Acting Superintendent and Deputy Divisional Commander Adrian Broomes was unable to provide the value or quantity of the drugs but said the process was their way of being transparent.

“These are the efforts of the police and the public who assisted us by giving us tips and information and some who put us in their prayers, which all help to keep Barbados safe.

“Unfortunately, the quantum is not known and the value is unknown because they are from different stations. However, it all started with detection, arrest, the court system, and this is the final stage in this process of transparency.

“At every stage of what we do, we ensure there is accountability and everything is in order,” Broomes said.

Last month, the police destroyed about 70 marijuana trees of various sizes and approximately 20 grams of cocaine at the Bridgetown Port.
The drugs were confiscated or discovered in the Bridgetown Division, which includes the Hastings/Worthing, District “A”, Central and Black Rock police stations. (TG)
