For the first time in living memory, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is convening special general meetings to hear appeals of two members who were expelled from the union.

Former president Akanni McDowall and member Natalie Murray, who were forced out in October on charges of bringing the union into disrepute, have taken their appeal to the general membership.

The appeals were supposed to be heard on two separate days last week but were called off due to a lack of a quorum.

While NUPW management has taken out notices in the media announcing that McDowall’s appeal will be heard today, he told the MIDWEEK NATION that the union’s approach to reconvening another meeting was “unreasonable” given the short notice.

“I only received an email this [Monday] afternoon inviting me to the meeting and I only saw the notice this afternoon in [Monday’s] paper,” he said, adding his attorneys had also informed him they were unable to attend the meeting at such short notice. (MB)
