CHARLES F. BROOME boys and St Angela’s girls will go into today’s finals of the National Primary Schools’ Athletics Championships with an early lead.

Both schools ran away with gold medals during the Boys’ and Girls’ Open high jump finals which were staged during the semi-finals last Wednesday.

But at the moment their lead is still too insignificant to cause a threat as athletes are expected to give their all in the finals.

Rivals will be looking out for Ashlynn Simmons of Eden Lodge Primary after she came away with record performances in both the 600 metres and the 400 metres in in 1:48.78 and 1:03.59minutes respectively.

All eyes will be closely at the 800 metres Open final which will see St Catherine’s Khalid Jahbari, who finished with the fastest time in last week’s 800 metres in 2:34.33 while St Gabriel’s Tytan Hinkson was second with 2:35.35.

But more will be looking to see if St Stephen’s Ratanang Barker can regain his prestige in that event. He qualified third in 2:36.74 minutes.

St Stephen’s Ziko Rogers will enter the 400 metres with a time of 1:02.25 minutes in the same division.

Jayden Greene will be hoping to maintain the number one position in the Under-13 boys’ 100 metres which he enters with 13.27 seconds.

However, he must keep up that speed as Shamari Addison will also aim to better his time and possibly put in a winning performance to be named the fastest boy at the primary school level.

In the same division, the talented Chrisaria Ballantyne clocked 13.39 seconds in the prelims.

Twin sisters Tania and Tia Applewhaite are also expected to put in a good performance in the Under-11 girls’ 100 metres having qualified in first and third position with 14.38 and 14.56 seconds respectively. They will also compete in the 200 metres event and Tania the 300 metres.

Entering with the second fastest time is Janea Joe with 14.45 seconds. Good Shepherd’s Jayden Cummins will also be one to watch since he qualified clocking a time of 13.89 seconds.

The 200 metres will also be an event to focus on as Tanesha Arthur was the only one to hit the 27 second mark when she crossed the line in 27.99 seconds at the prelims. Green also qualified with the fastest time in the 200 metres.

St Philip’s Jacobe Griffith threw a whopping 65.75 metres in last week’s Under-13 boys’ cricket ball throw while Keidasha Thomas of Gordon Greenidge Primary succeeded at 46.52 metres in the same division.

For the Under-11s, Raphael Lovell of Milton Lynch met a distance of 52.58 metres while Eboni Brathwaite of Hilltop Primary will try to hold on to take home the medal.

Kevion Newton if Wesley Hall will be hoping to put on a good performance for the final time to bring down the curtains on the primary school track and field meet.

In last week’s semifinals, he jumped the farthest in the long jump with 4.84 metres while Ariel Grant of Wesley Hall will be hoping to maintain her position in the girls.
