CARICOM Ambassador David Comissiong says Government’s decision to establish People’s Assemblies is not about setting up local government but about empowering citizens to contribute to public life.
Speaking during an online panel discussion organised by the Grenada Student Association of the University of the West Indies (UWI), at Cave Hill on Tuesday night, Comissiong said one of the objectives of the People’s Assemblies was to have a “much more people participatory system of governance”.
“People’s Assemblies are going to be a game changer,” the CARICOM Ambassador said during the panel discussion entitled “Imagining a new order for Caribbean politics; term limits, fixed election periods and young leaders in the political arena”
Leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, disagreed with Ambassador Comissiong on retaining term limits and having fixed election timetables. He said snap elections such as last month’s in Barbados where the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) repeated a 30-0 sweep of the poll put opposition parties at a disadvantage. (HH)
