All secondary students will be entitled to an additional two years in school when the new educational reform system is implemented.
This was disclosed by director of educational reform Dr Idamay Denny, who also indicated that the new system to replace the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination could be in place by 2023.
Speaking during the Ministry of Education’s turn in the Estimates Debate in the House of Assembly yesterday, she reiterated that the exam, popularly known as the Common Entrance or 11-Plus, will be abolished. She said the extra two years would give those students who require more time the opportunity “to reach their highest potential”.
“These children who are constantly left behind are not going to be able to move at the same pace as the ones who operate at the upper level of the continuum. Therefore, one of the significant changes we are proposing in education reform is that the same way that those who are writing CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) get an additional two years in school, we are proposing that all other students also get an additional two years in school.” (MB/GMB)
