New radar system set up

Barbados now has a more powerful weather radar system which should help better forecast inclement weather.

The island’s sole Doppler weather radar was commissioned yesterday at Castle Grant, St Joseph. It replaced the former model on the same spot, which was decommissioned last month. Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services Sabu Best said it was a very labour-intensive endeavour.

“The decommissioning of the former radar started in January and went on until mid-February and we had multiple challenges, both technical and natural.

“From then to now we moved at pace to have the new radar ready, working weekends and at night. We took apart the old one and replaced it with something modern,” he said. (CA)
