State wants life sentences

The state wants life for the Harewood brothers, one of whom shot and killed a man as he was fleeing from them.

However, attorneys for the brothers say their current sentences are excessive and have argued that the starting point for any new sentence should be 30 years in prison.

The submissions came as the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) Reference challenging the sentences of brothers Scott Colby Richardson Harewood, alias “Ratty”, and Stuart Kenny McMillian Harewood, alias “Cujoe”, as well as their appeal against those same sentences, were heard yesterday.

The Court of Appeal, comprising Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham and Justices of Appeal Rajendra Narine and Francis Belle, has reserved its decision.

The DPP’s Reference is asking the court to review the sentences of the Harewoods as the state believes the sentences were unduly lenient, while the appeals are contending they were excessive.

Scott, 35, and Stuart, 37, both of Seaview, St Philip, had pleaded guilty to the non-capital murder of Derek “Bhingy” Hunte on June 3, 2014. Hunte was shot six times in the back as he ran for his life. (HLE)
