Seven athletes to receive BOA scholarships

The Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA) today announced the names of seven athletes who have been awarded Olympic Solidarity Scholarships to assist with qualification and preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The scholarship recipients are: Michael Maskell, Clay Target Shooting; Alex Sobers, Aquatics: Swimming; Darian King, Tennis; Jason Wilson, Triathlon, and Track and Field athletes, Sade Williams, Shane Brathwaite and Tia-Adana Belle. The athletes will each receive financial support until the Tokyo Olympic Games scheduled for August 2020.

Qualification for the scholarships is contingent on the athletes’ technical ability to qualify for an Olympic Games as well as their current participation, internationally, in an Olympic discipline on the Tokyo 2020 roster. The athletes were recommended to the BOA by their national sporting federations and ratified by the BOA board. The names were then submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Solidarity by the BOA for ratification.

In announcing the scholarship recipients, President of the BOA, Sandra Osborne said she was pleased to have secured funding from the IOC to assist athletes with their preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. “Financial resources are crucial for athlete performance and we are pleased that the IOC has agreed with our recommendation for these athletes to receive support,” she said.
