Too many parents ‘not strict enough’

Where’s the parental plan?

That question is being asked by Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes.

While dealing with three delinquent youth in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court yesterday, he bemoaned the fact that not enough parents in Barbados were doing their due diligence to remain aware of what their children or wards were involved or associating with, when away from the home.

Weekes said he had a problem with parents not being strict enough with their children when discipline was needed. He even accused some parents of practising American discipline of simply confining children to their rooms, but still allowing them access to mobile phones, electronic tablets and even Playstations.

He gave the pep talk to three mothers after their sons had all pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance in Fairchild Street, The City, on October 14, in a rock-throwing incident. (BA)
