Government has agreed to meet with the stakeholders in the transportation sector this week after concerns were voiced about a lack of compensation.

President of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT), Roy Raphael, said while he did not want to prejudice the upcoming meeting in any way, among the talking points would be the displacement of taxi drivers at Heroes Square while it was being used for events.

“When big businesses are inconvenienced they get compensation so why don’t we?  That is one of the things we will discuss when we meet this week. We will also take a tour of The Granville Williams Bus Terminal because we have had issues where buses have displaced taxi drivers from parking spaces after a particular time which causes problems,” he said.

His comments came a week after he announced that the organisation would be serving the Attorney General notice of their intention to take the Government to court.

Raphael said whenever taxi operators were forced to move from Heroes Square, they lost hundreds of dollars. The latest incident was at the start if November for the Sagicor Life Inc. Lighting ceremony and other events are planned for the area this month, including the Remembrance Day parade and the Independence Day Parade.

Last month, Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw and representatives of the sector signed a Memorandum of Understanding, on the Future of Public Transportation in Barbados. (JC)
