White betters Best

Jamar “Bob” Best stirred memories of the shocking defeat which Victor “Earth” Ward had inflicted on Julian “Michael Jackson” White in the first Silver Hill championship before White showed his class to surge and defeat Best 20-22, 21-14, 21-5 on Wednesday night at Silver Hill.

Best played a superb game of defence to hold leads of 10-7 and 13-8 in the first game. White committed several attacking errors before he switched to a defensive style to reel in the “B’ Class islandwide champion, catching him at 13 and passing him to reach a score of 18-14.

However, a confident Best then advanced from 16-19 to hold game point 20-19. He eventually seized the first game before White grabbed the second to bring on the decider.

On a night of love, White blasted to 14-0 before Best won a point. He won just four more as White predictably romped to victory by dragging and pushing his opponent all around the court.

Gary “Kojak” Thomas was also taken to three games before he defeated an exhausted Wayne “Rubber Guts” Clarke 20-22, 21-5, 21-15. Clarke conceded the second game after trailing 5-18, but the saved energy could not get him over the line in the decider.

Darius “Baracus” Gaskin defeated Marlon Edwards from the North 21-15, 21-14.  Michael “Mikey Jean” Jean dismissed Sergeant Lloyd Deane 21-19, 21-14, while Aaron Barker beat Trevor Callender 21-10, 21-18 and Curtis Jones proved senior to Junior Alleyne 21-11, 22-20.

The rains ended the battle between Kerry “TC” Francis and Emar Edwards after Francis had won the first game 21-17, only to receive a sow 5-21 in the second game. Francis was up 12-10 before the rains ended the night’s action. That fixture had been rained out from Tuesday night.

The conclusion between Francis and Edwards and the other postponed match between Davian “Force Ripe” Taylor and Lloyd “Dick Man” Burke were to be staged last night. (KB)
