island in terms of their states of disrepair.

In addition, he said Thorne had spoken of turning the area into a flea market when the upgrade was completed.

“Oistins has a rich history and I don’t want us to lose it. In fact, when tourists are discussing Barbados, the thing they speak highest of oftentimes is Oistins. We just have to give them more variety at Oistins.”

However, he noted the neighbouring boat facility was much better now than it was two weeks ago when the area was littered with derelict and abandoned boats and overgrown bush. Humphrey also revealed work should soon be starting on the refurbishment of the Bridgetown market on the Princess Alice Highway. Thorne said yesterday’s cleanup of the market revealed a new ethos of collaboration.

“Here you have vendors who have sacrificed a morning in which they would otherwise have been plying their trade to collaborate with Government in the effort of cleaning the market,” he said, adding he would soon be turning his attention to the area next to the police station down to the spot obliquely opposite Chefette restaurant.
